Community Catch
Founder Charles Redfern has long wanted to see small scale fisheries better represented and recognised in advanced markets. Community Catch is the result of several year’s work. Charles has been on a number of Committees in the process, including the Standards and the Steering Committee of Catch and was then appointed as a Non-Executive Director. This is all pro-bono unpaid work. The idea of Community Catch is to provide a free benchmarking tool for small scale fisheries, a certification option for those that want access to markets where the certification mechanism is important and a fishery Improvement option.
The dream is to build a sustainability benchmarking platform that is accessible anywhere around the world in multiple languages and which will be used by fishers, consultants, small NGO’s and participants in governance systems to advance sustainability. Community Catch is specifically for small scale fisheries (SSF), responds to various official declarations for SSF to be better represented, such as the FAO’s Voluntary Guidelines for Securing SSF’s, and reflects a more modern definition of sustainability aligned to the UNSDG’s.
